2009 Starts with Four Calls in Two Days

Jan 2nd - 2009 began with four fire incidents for Company 25 in the first two days of the year.  On January 1st at 15:04 hrs, Company 25 and Brush 35 were alerted to a reported brush fire in the area of Brandt RD and Sanderson RD.  Units found an area about 30′ wide burning and extinguished the fire quickly.  The box was placed available at 15:14 hours.

On January 2nd, Company 25 responded to three incidents, two of which were in York County. The first incident occured at 00:40 hours and was a report of wires down near the intersection of W Lisburn RD and Speedway Dr.  Company 25 was alerted to the same incident on Christmas Eve and found the wires were not electrical nor were they on the roadway.  Once it was determined the wires were not a hazard to the public, the box was placed available at 00:49 hours.

At 18:39 hours, E25 was alerted to a report of smoke in a house at 727 Harrisburg Pike in Carroll Twp.  Command 64 placed E25 available while en route to the scene at 18:51 hours.  A short time later, at 19:03 E25 was alerted again to Carroll Twp, York County for a chimney fire at 75 Junction RD, just off Williams Grove RD.  E25 was first in at the scene at 19:08 and remained until 19:32 hours.

2008 Ends with Two Fire Calls

Dec 31st - The last day of the year brought Company 25 two fire calls.  The first call (10:22 hrs) was a reported automatic fire alarm at 710 Eppley RD.  Shortly after dispatch, Headquarters advised Chief 25 the alarm was a false trip.  Chief 25 placed the box available. 

At 18:24 hrs, Companies 25 and 33 were alerted to a reported field fire near the intersection of Williams Grove RD and Stoner RD.  Fire Police Lt. Gene Woodward reported that he observed the fire on the way home and stomped it out.  Chief 125 (Farrell) investigated and placed the box available at 18:37.  That field fire was the last reported fire incident in Monroe Twp. in 2008.

In 2008, Monroe Fire Company responded to 243 calls for service.  A complete year-end report will be published on the website at a later date.

Two More for Christmas Day

Dec 25th - Merry Christmas everyone!  While most families spent time together on Christmas Day, the Monroe Fire Company family spent the middle of the day with each other at emergency incidents.

The first call of the day came at 11:24 hours for a medical assist in the township.  Crews cleared that incident at 11:45 hours.  At 13:00 Engine 25 was alerted for a report of smoke in a home at 426 Mountain RD in Carroll Twp, York County.  E25 was placed available six minutes after dispatch.

Christmas Eve Brings Four Calls

Company 25 spent Christmas Eve responding to four incidents within the township. 

Engine 25 and Rescue 40 were dispatched to a reported auto accident at the intersection of Zimmerman RD and York RD (Route 74) at 08:30 hrs.  Weather at the time was mixed precipitation with icy patches on the roadways.  C125 arrived on scene and held the incident to 1 BLS ambulance (EMS 40) and E25.  EMS transported 1 patient to the hospital with minor injuries.

At 12:10 hrs, Company 25 was alerted to a report of smoke in a house at 497 Criswell RD in the 25-02 box.  Along with Company 25, the following units were alerted:

  • Engine 35
  • Engine 136
  • Truck 36
  • Rescue 27
  • Tanker 41

Once on scene, Command 25 determined the source of the smoke to be a blocked wood stove flue pipe and held the incident to Engines 25 and 35.  The box was placed available at 12:38 hrs.

At 18:10 hrs, Company 25 was dispatched to a local alarm at 1355 Asper Dr for trees down blocking the roadway.  C125 arrived on scene and advised U25 would be sufficient for the incident.  Co 25, with the assistance of a local resident cleared the trees and went available.

At 22:51 hrs, Company 25 was dispatched to a local alarm for wires down in the area of the intersection of Speedway Dr and W Lisburn Rd.  Chief 25 and Utility 25 responded and found the utility pole was off the roadway.  Cumberland County HQ notified the appropriate power company and Company 25 went available.

Congratulations to the LaConte Family!

Firefighter Kevin LaConte and his wife Grace welcomed Luca James LaConte into the world on 12/9/08 at 4:02 AM. Young Luca weighs 6lbs, 10oz and is 19″ long. Kevin reports that following a long labor, everyone is resting and doing well. Luca is Kevin and Grace’s second child. Their first child is Angelina LaConte.

Saturday Triple Play

Dec 6th - A 7:32, Tanker 25 was alerted to a building fire in the area of Rich Valley RD and I-81.  Cumberland County 9-1-1received numerous calls from drivers on I-81 reporting a building fire along the Conodoguinet Creek.  At 7:37, the Silver Spring Twp police department reported in the area with fire showing.  Chief 33 upgraded the alarm to include Mini-Pumper 25 due to the remote location of the fire.  The address of the fire was actually at 160 Rich Valley RD and was found to be a log cabin on the property.  At 7:50, Tanker 25 arrived on scene and supplied E133 which had to position on the paved driveway, approximately 500′ from the fire scene due to accessibility issues.  Tanker 234 also assisted with water supply operations and provided shuttle operations to the scene from a hydrant at Rich Valley RD and Carlisle Pike.  Mini-Pumper 25 was able to access the fire scene and assisted with extinguishment and overhaul.  Tanker 25 was released from the scene at 10:00.  Mini-Pumper 25 followed at 10:36. 

 At 10:17, just as Tanker 25 had returned to the station, Headquarters dispatched Tanker 25 for a trailer fire at 313 Bahama Circle in Leiby’s Trailer Park off the Carlisle Pike.  E313 (who had transferred to Co 33 due to the Rich Valley RD incident) arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire.  Tanker 25 arrived on scene at 10:25 and staged until Command 33A requested Tanker 25 transfer to Company 33’s quarters.  Tanker 25 was placed in service at 10:57.

 Also of note, while on the Rich Valley RD incident, Company 25 was dispatched for a medical assist in the township, bringing to total three calls in less than three hours.

Dec 4th: A crash and a fire

Dec 4 - This morning at 0723 hours, Company 25 and Rescue 27 were alerted to a reported motor vehicle accident with unknown injuries just north of the intersection of W Lisburn RD and Williams Grove RD in the 25-08 box.  EMS and Rescue 27 arrived on scene first to find a Toyota SUV had struck a utility pole and traveled approximately 500 ft into a recently plowed field.  It appeared as though the accident had occurred several hours before and the driver had fled the scene.  The vehicle suffered major front-end damage.  The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating.

Later, at 1106 hrs, Tanker 25 was alerted as part of a first-alarm assignment for a mobile home fire at 64 Santa Monica Ave in Silver Spring Twp (Box 33-10).  Chief 25 and 125, who were already in the area, responded and Chief 25 assumed command.  Tanker 25, with a crew of three, positioned for water supply but was never needed.   The tanker’s additional manpower was sent to the manpower pool and assisted with overhaul of the structure. The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical.  The Red Cross is assisting the homeowner who was slightly injured.

November Incident Report

Dec 1st - For the month of November 2008, Monroe Fire Company responded to 20 calls for service.  Those incidents consisted of the following:

  • Structure Fires - 8 (40%)
  • Medical Assists - 6 (30%)
  • Auto Accidents - 3 (15%)
  • Wild Fires - 2 (10%)
  • Miscellaneous Calls - 1 (5%)
  • TOTAL - 20

Of the 20 calls, 8 were mutual aid calls to neighboring municipalities.  Those mutual aid calls were located in the following areas:

  • York County, Monaghan Twp - 2 (25%)
  • York County, Carroll Twp - 1 (12.5%)
  • York County, Dillsburg Borough - 1 (12.5%)
  • York County, York Haven Borough - 1 (12.5%)
  • Cumberland County, Silver Springs Twp - 1 (12.5%)
  • Cumberland County, Mechanicsburg Borough - 1 (12.5%)
  • Cumberland County, Dickinson Twp - 1 (12.5%)

Of special note, MFC responded to the following incidents:

  • 11/3/ - House Fire, 1010 Otto Dr, Monroe Twp.
  • 11/10 - House Fire, Big Oak Rd, Monaghan Twp
  • 11/11 - Mountain Fire, 1237 Indian Peg RD, Monroe Twp
  • 11/22 - Standby, 5-Alarm Fire, York Haven, York County

Three for Veterans’ Day

Nov 11th - The day began with a reported brush fire in the area of 801 W Trindle RD in the 25-101 box. Brushes 25 and 33 and Tanker 25 responded to the area and investigated.  In the end, it was discovered that a homeowner on Fairfield St was burning leaves.

At 17:08, Engine 25 and Rescue 40 were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident in the 1200 block of York RD with a single vehicle overturned.  C225 (Murphy) arrived on scene and confirmed the patient was out of the vehicle and injuries were minor.  The incident was held to E25, which assisted with fluid control.

While on scene, at 18:10, Headquarters alerted Companies 23, 25, 35 and 36 to a reported moutain fire to the rear of 1237 Indian Peg Rd.  C225 responded from the MVA and located the fire on the east end of Indian Peg RD.  C225 held the box to Brush 25 and 136 and Tanker 25.
