Major HAZMAT Operation in Silver Spring Twp

April 18 - At 09:15 hrs, Engine 25 was alerted to respond to the Carlisle Pike at Hempt RD for foam operations at the scene of a major fuel spill that was the result of a collision between a fuel tanker and dump truck. The Engine (C25 - Heckert) responded with three and arrived on the west side of the accident scene. The Engine crew applied a foam blanket to the spill site shortly after arrival.

Utility 25, with David D. Heckert and C225 (Farrell), also responded to the scene and assisted with foam operations (see photo gallery).

E25 remained on scene to assist with foam operations throughout the incident, which lasted most of the day. The incident was declared "under control" by Command 33 around 19:00.

Special thanks to Capt 25 (Murphy) and FF Ewing, who responded to the scene at 17:30 to relieve the original Engine crew.

The incident brought a number of local, county and state agencies to the scene, as well as private contractors.

Back to the Border...Again
April 10th - Once again, Engine Company's 25 and 33 and Rescue 27 were alerted to a motor vehicle accident on the Border. This one was near the intersection of W Trindle RD and Sinclair RD. Crews secured the vehicle, as well as a small fluid spill into a nearby stream. Photos to come soon.

New Air Fill Station Installed

April 9th - Crews began installation of the station's new air fill unit this evening. The Scott RevolveAir Refill station provides a safer and more-efficient SCBA refill station compared to the current in-house cascade system.

The refill station is powered by the Scott Hush 15hp Air Compressor, which includes an on-board air purfication system and meets current NFPA, CSA, and NIOSH standards.

The unit was paid for with Dept of Homeland Security Funding (Assistance to Firefighters Grants). The funding will also be used to purchase 15 new MSA SCBA's, to be delivered later this year.

Five Calls for the 5th
Company 25 assisted at this auto accident near the township line in the 25-08 box. Several hours later, a second accident occurred near the same location in the 25-08 box.

April 5th - The fifth day of the month brought Company 25 five calls, beginning in the morning with a medical assist. Later in the afternoon, Tanker 25 was alerted to smoke in a home at 228 Hempt Rd in the 33-01 box. Later in the day, Company 25 was alerted to assist PSP with a reported non-injury accident in the area of Williams Grove RD and W. Lisburn RD. At 22:06, Engine 25 and Rescue 27 were alerted to a reported motor vehicle accident in the area of W Lisburn RD and Fairway Dr in the 25-08 box. While en route, headquarters advised of possible confinement in one of the vehicles. C125 arrived on scene first followed by E25, C225 and R27. In total there were three vehilces involved and there was no confinement. E25 and R27 secured power to the vehicles put down absorbant material to contain a large amount of fluids on the roadway. While on the scene, Headquarters advised Command 25 of another vehicle accident at the intersection of Williams Grove RD and W Lisburn RD - about a 1/4 mile west of the current accident. March Goes Out With Three Calls

March 31 - The last day of March brought Monroe Fire Company three separate incidents. The first, transferred Tanker 25 to Company 19's quarters while they operated on a commerical building fire in Perry County (thanks for letting us break in the new day room Gary!). Following the tanker transfer, the remaining daylight crew staffed the station and performed routine maintenance.

During this time, companies 25, 33 and Rescue 27 were alerted to a two vehicle accident in Silver Springs Twp at Mulberry Dr and W Trindle RD (another "border" call). Crews stabilized the vehicles and assisted with patient care. A total of three individuals were transported from the scene (photo gallery to follow shortly).

Not long after returning to station and getting equipment back in service, Company 25 was alerted to the area of 1309 Williams Grove RD for a pickup truck fire. The engine responded with four and found a well involved pickup truck that was the result of a MVA. Crews were challenged due to not only the fuel in the vehicle, but also a fuel leak from a spare fuel can and generator in the bed of the truck; however, smart and effective use of the engine's Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) quickly extinguised the fire.

Crews from Engine 33, Engine 25, and Rescue 27 operate at the scene of a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Mulberry Dr and W Trindle RD.

Blast from the Past
"The Green Monster" and the "CO Box" are only a few of the names given to this tanker. These photo are presumably from the Williams Grove Steam Engine Assn Consignment sales many years ago, when the former tanker was sold.
A recent trip exploring a hundreds of photos at the station uncovered these gems. Special thanks to Curt Hall (C33) for getting the pictures scanned.

Engine 25 returned in service a little over 2 hours later.

Wind Damage Leads to Field Fire

February 11 - Monroe Fire officials believe a downed electrical wire sparked a field fire at 207 Clouser RD. The night before, the area saw wind gusts in excess of 40 mph. Ice Storm Brings 16 Calls

December 16th -- Mother Nature unleashed her fury beginning the night of December 15 and into the morning of the 16th. Early in the morning, the Cumberland County 9-1-1 Center went into Status 3 operating condition, meaning radio traffic would be limited and all non-priorty calls would be called into the fire station by phone - not given over the air.

As a result, Company 25 manned the station beginning in the morning and lasting until approximately 21:00 hours.

During that time, the company responded to 16 storm-related calls across the township, most of which were trees on power lines or across the roadway.

1 Killed in Williams Grove RD Crash

December 10th -- An 82-year-old Dillsburg man was killed and a Newville woman was seriously injured in a four vehicle accident at the intersection of Williams Grove RD and W. Lisburn RD.

The accident was initially dispatched as unknown injuries, but was quickly upgraded to an accident with entrapment and ejection as additional calls were received.

Bystanders pulled the 82-yr-old driver from the wreckage and began CPR. First-arriving Monroe firefighters took over resuscitation efforts; however, the man died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

A Newville woman was ejected from her vehicle and suffered head injuries. She was flown to Hershey by Lifelion.

Two vehicles stopped in the northbound lane of Williams Grove RD were also involved in the accident as the vehicle which was initially struck in the intersection rolled into them. The driver of one of the vehicles was transported from the scene by ground and another was a patient refusal.

Monroe was assisted by Citizens' of Mechanicsburg (Co. 27), West Shore EMS, and Dillsburg EMS.
